Three of Lone Star’s debate participants placed at their first tournament of the year last weekend.

”Our novice cross examination debaters ended up placing in 2nd and 4th at the tournament and one of our varsity CX teams took 3rd,” John Vice, the debate teacher, said.

Cross Examination is one of the five types of speech and debate offered at Lone Star and is a fact-based type of debate that requires a partner.

“I’m really proud of how well our first-year debaters did in their first tournament, considering they had less than two months to prepare and learn everything they needed,” Will Owens, 2019, said.

Most of the partner pairs who competed in this tournament met each other at the start of this school year.

”I and my partner Sam ended up placing fourth in the novice  cross examination category of the tournament and we won two out of three rounds,” Victoria Ambrosionek, 2021, said.

A novice debater is a debater who is in their first year on the Lone Star debate team and is being mentored by the more experienced debaters on the team.

”I was really nervous for this tournament because we had very little time to prepare our cases for the tournament. This is my first year on the team so I was really overwhelmed by the whole experience,” Ambrosionek said.
