The International Cultural club has many plans to start off this new year. According to Grace-Kelly Muvunyi, class of 2015, “Students won’t want to miss out.” This new club began in 2014, and since has grown to reach the attention of much of the LSHS student body. According to the founders, Shaz Damani, president, and Grace-Kelly Muvunyi, Vice-president, this club has the mission, to promote cultural awareness, and to celebrate the various cultures represented in the LSHS student body.

Since it’s origin, ICC has hosted one meeting every month that displayed different aspects, food, traditions, and cultures of foreign countries. They have coasted into the realms of Italy, Japan, India, the Middle East, and on December 11 ICC will host their first African themed meeting. Grace-Kelly Muvunyi, vice president, was born in Rwanda, in Central Africa, and will present to ICC members, the customs of Rwandan wedding, through the perspective of a born- Rwandan citizen.  Grace-Kelly Muvunyi, senor states, “Rwanda  was a nation wounded by the devastation of the malignant Rwandan Genocide. Today Rwanda is a nation, always improving, and always celebrating. On December 11, ICC will share some of the vibrant spirit that has made Rwanda such a lively culture, and unique place.

“We want to introduce the student body to a place they are not entirely knowledgeable about, ”  Grace-Kelly senior said

After the Ebola scare earlier this month, the lesson on Africa’s variety of cultures and food will teach students about what more Africa has to offer.

“Who doesn’t love food?” Shaz Damani senior said.

Much how a potluck would work, peers are  encouraged to bring a dish they feel represents African cuisine.

“We like to see students get creative with the food they bring,” Grace-Kelly senior said.

One student is also assigned a topic of their choice to discuss during the meeting, then everyone dives into the food that peers have prepared.

“They can pick whatever cultural topic they would like, I learn something new every meeting,” Shaz Damani senior said.

Led by President Shaz Damani and Vice President Grace-Kelly, the meetings take place once a month in Mrs. Lin’s room.

“We are always looking forward to seeing new faces at our meetings, it’s never too late to join,” Grace-Kelly senior said.
